MAPEAR O DESIGN
Project 2014-2411/001-001 | 552374-CREA-1-2014-1-IT-CULT-COOP 2
Lead Researcher: Maria Helena Souto
Funded by H2020
Summary: Large scale cooperation project, co-financed by the Creative Europe Programme, within the framework of the Culture sub-programme, interdisciplinary and non-profit organisations. MoMoWo seeks to elevate the work of women in architecture, and in interior and industrial design, promoting their cultural and economic relevance. With this in mind, the International Design Competition was launched for the visual identity (including the logo) and a promotional object for MoMoWo. This competition gave young designers the opportunity to actively take part in a European project and to gain experience and international visibility, through the creation of the MoMoWo brand.

Summary: Increasingly more familiar with new digital technologies early on, designers of the 21st century represent a constant challenge to design education. In the initial instruction period, Basic Design aims at incorporating the fundamental principles of design using a holistic, creative and experimental approach. Despite focusing on academically instructing the designer, Basic Design has yet to be explored with regard to the use of new technologies. Indeed, the advantages of using instruments based on virtual reality (games, simulation, virtual worlds) is known when it comes to learning. Within the scope of a broader study which aims at testing the contribution of a tool based on virtual reality to improve the learning of Basic Design topics, the objectives of this study are to develop a research plan and to validate the instruments to be used (the experimental scenario; the metrics; scales, tools; procedures for data collection; and others), including the carrying out of a pilot study.

Summary: The prevention of accidents related to dangerous substances is especially important with younger children as they have not yet developed the cognitive skills that enable them to “read” the warnings in the same manner as adults. Warnings are part of a quality system for the prevention of accidents and they have three main purposes: 1) to help people make informed decisions; 2) to reduce or minimise accidents and health problems by encouraging safe behaviour; and 3) reminding users of the potential harmful effects of the products. Thus, this study aims at learning how children between the ages of 7 and 10 and who are at the stage of the specific activities, interpret warnings about poisonous products and how they distinguish between poisonous/dangerous products and those that are not. Also part of this study's objectives are (1) to design warnings about dangerous products stemming from the children’s knowledge of them; (2) exposing children to these warnings on packages which contain the substances or products and to see if they notice and understand these warnings and (3) to check whether the children adhere more easily to these age-appropriate warnings compared to the warnings on packages sold at present.

Summary: Collaborative and transdisciplinary project with the objective of developing the instruction of university students, namely in the areas of engineering, design, social sciences and humanities, by applying innovative methodologies of active learning based on solving problems in vulnerable communities. The setting up of Experimental Laboratories of collaborative learning, unprecedented in Portugal, brings together the academic community and civil society, combining scientific knowledge with that of the layperson, promoting new forms of knowledge born out of a contemporary context yet aware of the history of the present.
